Lenses

To stop spectacle lenses steaming up when wearing a mask order your anti-fog stay here.

Buchanan Optometrists have continually been recognised as one of the leading lens experts in the country.

We continually surprise new patients with how, just by recommending the correct lenses and coatings we can enhance their vision, improve the appearance and comfort of their spectacles and dramatically improve everyday tasks.

When we measure you for your lenses we use computer technology to take the most accurate measurements possible. Your previous opticians may have used a ruler or pen markings on the lens?!? We haven't measured patients for spectacles with rulers and pens since 2005. It really isn't the most accurate way. We were one of the first opticians in the UK to embrace digital measurements. We take 2 images - one from the front and one from the side while you wear a calibration frame. This allows us to get the measurements for your spectacles to within a fraction of a millimetre. This can improve your field of view through the lenses by up to 40%! Finally we take 8 measurements compared to the normal 2 taken by most opticians, taking into account how the frame sits on your face, the curvature, distance and angle it sits at. This allows us to further tailor your lenses to produce the most accurate lens possible to give you the very best vision. Using these measurements we can improve your field of view through the lenses by up to as much as 40% over conventional spectacle lenses.

We source each and every lens for each and every patient from various suppliers to ensure you receive the very best lenses possible for your needs.

Individualised Varifocals

We are specialists in individualised varifocal lenses. We tailor your varifocal lenses specifically for you, taking into account your lifestyle and work, ensuring we give you the most comfortable vision possible. We often meet new patients who have tried and not got on with varifocals from other opticians in the past, or perhaps just tolerated them through necessity. Once you have tried our varifocal lenses you will never look back. Varifocals, like shoes need to be fitted perfectly for you, or they will always cause you little niggles. Selecting the correct lens and fitting is a skilled, precision job- one that we only entrust to our fully qualified dispensing opticians.

We pride ourselves in finding visual solutions to your specific problem. Whether that be vocational, sport or hobby needs, we find a lens which fits in with your lifestyle. We specialise in vocational, office and computer lenses to relieve your visual fatigue at work or leisure.

Lens design for the digital age

With almost a quarter of people needing glasses to see computer screens, clearly we are facing an age of increasingly demands on our eyesight. The spectacle lenses we dispense utilise advanced freeform design to produce individualised lenses based on your prescription, frame requirements, work and hobbies. Freeform design works by using special generators linked to sophisticated software that tells a single point diamond cutter how to cut the lens at thousands of points across its surface, producing pinpoint accuracy. This produces a superior lens which takes into account your lifestyle and habits, allowing you to obtain the clearest, sharpest vision across the lens no matter what demands you place on it.

Special occupational lenses are tailored to your work style. For instance allowing you to focus clearly on a computer screen whilst maintaining sharp close vision to read or look at tiny detail. Such lenses help you to obtain sharper vision in the zones appropriate for your working style, therefore reducing eye fatigue and neck and back problems in the work environment. Such lenses can also be tailored for occupations and hobbies such as reading music, playing cards etc.

New Lens Can Help Promote Sleep, Improve Night Diving and Reduce Dry Eyes

Did you see the recent BBC series called ‘Trust me, I’m a Doctor’? There was a very interesting segment about sleep and how it is being affected by our use of TV screens, phones and computers. The screens emit a high proportion of blue light that during the day can cause eye fatigue and dry eyes and in the evening can upset the melatonin balance that helps us to sleep. Our eyes have receptors sensitive to blue light, this light is what wakes us up in the morning – as the sun rises there is a high level of blue light and this is what starts to wake us up. The blue light penetrates your eyelids and triggers your body to start waking. The light emitted by electronic displays disturbs our sleep patterns.

Research shows that more than 1 in 3 adults spends between 4 and 6 hours each day using digital devices while 1 in 7 use them up to 12 hours a day. Many of these devices, for example tablets and smartphones, are held at a close distance, with the new technology we are all using our eyes are being exposed to increasing levels of blue light.

Thankfully, a new lens has been developed to help with this. BlueControl lenses from Hoya neutralise the high energy visible light emitted by LED and LCD screens and help your eyes feel more comfortable even when using digital devices for prolonged periods of time. They also have the added benefit of better contrast perception, scratch resistance, water, dirt and grease repellence. The lenses have also been proven to help night driving and reduce dry eye symptoms whilst using the computer. The lenses also improve colour contrast.

This is what our patients are saying about BlueControl:

'I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with my new glasses. Not only are the lenses great but the new blue control coating is wonderful. Night driving has improved so much, at first I thought they had installed extra lights on the M25 as my vision was so clear. Also the blurring I was experiencing after using the internet on my phone has considerably improved.'

An email from another of our patients

“Hello,
Alisdair asked if I would give feedback on the new blue technology lenses.  I thought it time I did this as its been a few months since getting them. They are fab!  I can see the computer screen so much more clearly than before and I find that my eyes are not getting as tired and irritated by the end of the day as they did before using these new lenses.
Another thing I have noticed, right from day one is that my eyes are kept warmer and therefore more moist. I am sure this helps lessen the irritation caused by using a computer screen.
I would definitely recommend these lenses to anyone who, like me, suffer with dry eyes as my eyes have been generally much more comfortable since I got my new glasses.”
