At Buchanan Audiology hearing centre, we use the latest technologies to look after the health of your ears and also give you the best opportunity to achieve easy listening without strain or struggle. You will have time throughout your test with Eilene to discuss your concerns. She will spend up to 75 minutes assessing your hearing and recommending the best solution to your problem.
A hearing test is not only about assessing what you can hear, Eilene spends time carrying out otoscopy and video otoscopy assessing your entire outer ear including the health of your ear canal checking for any potential blockages or excessive wax, the health of your eardrum and assessing your pinna (the outside of your ear) checking for potential skin concerns.
Eilene will carry out a further assessment of the outer and middle ear using tympanometry. This test uses a small round dome, like an earpiece that creates slight variations of pressure within the ear canal assessing the condition of the middle ear and mobility of the eardrum. Tympanometry checks the middle ear function for any abnormalities which can be treated if required. We include this routinely in your hearing assessment (most hearing tests do not include this). This essential diagnostic test should be carried out to assist in a comprehensive evaluation of your ears.
Eilene will then carry out your hearing test using pure tone audiometry covering the full range from 250Hz to 8kHz. You will have both air conduction audiometry testing your hearing through the ear canal using headphones and bone conduction where which examines what you can hear using a headband that transmits the sound through your skull. This assists Eilene to diagnose if there is anything within the ear that could be blocking the noise getting to your inner ear.
Finally, Eilene completes your assessment with Speech audiometry which measures and scores your ability to hear and recognise words at different intensity levels. It is complementary to your pure tone audiometry evaluation. It is essential during hearing aid fitting and to assist in the diagnosis of certain potential conditions within your ear.
Should you require hearing aids, Eilene will spend the time with you to discuss your options and recommend the best solution to your hearing problem and lifestyle. Hearing aids nowadays are inconspicuous and can be equipped with a host of features such as Bluetooth linking to your phone or television. Being completely independent of any hearing aid manufacturer or national hearing aid supplier, means we have access to all the world’s leading hearing aid brands, giving you an almost unlimited choice in hearing technology.

It may be surprising to know that treating even mild cases of hearing loss can be advantageous If you don’t treat hearing loss early it can deteriorate at a quicker rate and it can be much harder to adjust to life with hearing aids once hearing loss is more severe. If the ears are not functioning well, the inner hair cells of your cochlea are not stimulated an appropriate level and deteriorate at a quicker rate.
Throughout life your brain becomes slower at interpreting sound and speech; therefore aiding hearing can stimulate healthy brain function. Research has shown that treating hearing loss can also delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
